It’s Time To Recycle a Media Campaign!
TimetoRecycle.com is a website designed for easy access to recycling programs available in the North Central Texas region. The goal of this web site is to increase awareness of the benefits of recycling and encourage all citizens in the region to participate in local recycling programs. This web site was developed and is maintained by the North Central Texas Council of Governments in cooperation with the Regional Recycling Coordinators Roundtable.
The Time to Recycle goal of the SEE Less Trash Regional Solid Waste Management Plan is to, “see that purchased materials are reused and recycled wherever possible.” The Plan further identifies recycling education and awareness as an important priority under the Time to Recycle objective to, "Use outreach and education programs to facilitate long-term changes in attitudes about source reduction, reuse, and recycling”. On a regional scale, the most cost-effective approach to achieve this objective is mass media. Therefore, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and the Regional Recycling Coordinators Roundtable (RRCR) proposed to enhance the successful Time to Recycle program with a coordinated media campaign. NCTCOG received funding through the FY05 Regional Solid Waste Implementation Project Funding for a regional recycling education and awareness media campaign consisting of advertisements on billboards and in movie theaters. These methods of advertising were identified by the RRCR as an effective means of promoting recycling education and awareness because of the large audiences that are reached and the ability to target specific geographic areas.
Actually, a local member government was so impressed by a professionally developed advertising campaign sponsored by the National Soft Drink Association that they proposed to bring it to the North Central Texas region. Due to the overwhelming support of the Regional Recycling Coordinators Roundtable (RRCR), the necessary permissions were secured from the National Soft Drink Association to adapt this national campaign to include the regional “Time To Recycle” logo and message. NCTCOG is adapting the Time To Recycle Media campaign from the national slogan of “We Got Plans for Your Bottles and Cans” media campaign, that is based on the “don’t lecture me, entertain me” marketing approach. The campaign is designed to motivate people to recycle by displaying products made from recyclable material. This message shows the direct result of recycling. Five slogans are being used:
